So, we start out digging through electronic piles, boxes of cables,
crates of old keyboards. You get the idea... Recycled electronics,
electronics that other people threw out or gave away. Presumably,
believing they were of no value/ useless. We are going to build
our dev system/web server from 'recycled' parts. Strictly from
things others have labeled as junk. Partly because it may make for
an interesting project, and in turn an interesting story. Partly
because cash at startup can be very tight. Mostly though, because
this is exactly how it happened... This is how we got from digging
through junk, to here. To you, connected to a network of sites and
apps that were built on those parts, reading these words..
This is our story...
It's meant to be a history lesson on VdStuDioS and Virtual Desktop,
It's meant to be a tech guide and tutorial on the process of setting
up from scratch... It's meant to be entertaining and informative. We
are going to tell the tale and divide each step into individual
tutorials/guides on how and why we do each part. Maybe even discuss
the alternatives here or there.. Maybe toss in a joke or two, bad or
not.. Basically a lot of tldr; that hopefully will be amusing at
least, educational at best.
Code Snippets
We include code snippets wherever we can. Both for all the commands to
install/config the components we need. As well as any that are relavant
to get related info from the cli. Unless otherwise stated the snippets
will be for bash, assuming the default environment.
The hardware
As we dug through the scrap, we slowly found the parts to make functioning
systems. We're going to build/rebuild a laptop as a controller of sorts,
a desktop as a web/file server, and an old phone tied in to them for testing
mobile. More information can be found at the links below. The hardware isn't
new or impressive but it works and that's enough for now.
There are lots of bash code/commands to get hardware and hardware status
information.We've included as many as we could make relevant. Most of them can
be found in the hardware specs for each machine. They are the commands we used
to pull the info from our systems. They will work equally well on yours.
The sample code/commands link to more information on each one, as well as to
similar ones. If there is hardware info to get and a command to get it, you'll
find it in there. This is a tutorial, after all. There's probably even some manpages
around (links provided where relevant).
